The
necropolis of Pantalica is in the centre of an area of exceptional beauty
and great natural, historical and archaeological interest. An open book
preserving outstanding traces of the past.
The first settlements date back to about 1300 B.C., an era in which the
Sicilian people, under the protection of the Siculi, Musoni etc., abandoned
the coast in order to settle on higher, inaccessible ground.
The tombs of the north and northwest necropolis date back to the Bronze
Age (1300-1000 B.C.) while those lying on the south side are for the most
part of the Iron Age (9000-8000B.C.). There are the remains of four Byzantine
cliff villages and three small Byzantine churches. The Arab invasion (9000
A.D.) brought an end to the civilisation in Pantalica.
