This is an ancient
town, possibly already inhabited by the Sicilians in the 8th century B.C.
and it was one of the richest and most ancient territories of Sicily.
In fact the county of Modica- founded in 1296, reached as far as Alcamo,
Cacciamo and Calatafini, in other words, a quarter of the land of the
whole of Sicily. It was the "Regnum in Regno".
It was destroyed in the earthquake of 1693 and by a flood in 1902 which
changed its conformation. The city, birthplace of Salavatore Quasimodo,
spreads out in a semicircle along the slopes and the hill leading to the
Castle.
It is rich in Baroque masterpieces and art treasures to be discovered
among the churches and in the sumptuous palaces.
